what are the extra marks?

Hi,

I've bought this little sugar sifter which is allegedly made in 1843 by SAMUEL HAYNE & DUDLEY CATER. However, there are four other initials, two clearly visible and two very faint CJ (or GJ) and BD. Does anyone have any idea what these represent? It also seems that the decoration may have been added after the hallmarking, what do others think?

G.J for George Jamieson, dates seen 1839..1862 (registered Apr 1848) seen on flatware, tea service.
George Jamieson's pieces may also have the Aberdeen mark; ABD (with little N)

Hi Oel,

Many thanks for your very prompt reply. What i don't understand is why there are makers marks for George Jamieson as well as for Hayne and Cater (the hallmarks on the extreme right, slightly cut into by the pattern.

That is interesting about the Aberdeen as I thought that I could see a faint A under the loupe.

George Jamieson probably punched his responsibility mark being retailer and on a later stage his ‘retailer’s mark’ has been rubbed out. I believe his mark was supposed to overstrike the maker’s mark of Samuel Hayne & Dudley Carter but somehow someone marked it on the wrong position.

Thanks for that, I hadn't realised that Retailers would over-strike makers marks with their own. You learn something new everyday.

I've posted some more pics of it to see whether people think it is a sifter or a strainer. The reason why I'm wondering is that I posted a Russian strainer, on the Russian Silver section, and asked the same question, and someone said that the difference was that strainers had holes whereas sifters usually had cuts/slits.
Any thoughts? It is just over 6" in length

Yes, in general I believe; strainers round holes and sifters cuts & slits sometimes combined with round & oval holes. However I am afraid we are off topic.
