Was "Sterling" used in America prior to 1850?

Postby Jag » Tue Apr 03, 2012 4:25 pm

Here's another basic question that I couldn't find a direct answer to in the glossary or elsewhere online. Is it fair to say that any piece of American silver that is stamped "Sterling" was made around 1850 or later? Is 1850 the correct date for the adoption of the term? Are there any examples where the term was stamped on American silver prior to this date?

Thanks

Jag, even around 1850 "Sterling" would be a rare mark to find, common usage occured well after the Civil War around 1870.
