Religious Spoon?

Hi,

I bought this spoon at Auction quite a few years back when it was described as an Antique European Silver Religious Spoon. It was really very tarnished but no sign of any maker's or silver marks. I initially posted on another forum about a year back as i couldn't work out how to post pics on this one, so here is the link to it.

As you can see replies did not flow in. However, since then I have tested the spoon and the shaft does test as silver, but not the bowl, but that might be because it has the remnants of gilt.

It measures c 22cm long and weighs a hefty 230 gr.

I have some better pics if I can only work out how to post pics here, and I also have some old Russian silver that i'd like help on.

Hi,

I have tested the spoon and the shaft does test as silver, but not the bowl, which is very shallow, but that might be because it has the remnants of gilt. It could be a communion spoon, but that is only a wild guess.

It measures c 23cm long and weighs a hefty 230 gr.

Does the style indicate a country of origin to anyone, at all?

Hi,

I originally posted this a year ago, but no-one seemed to be able to help back then, so I'm having another try, fresh pair of eyes as they say.

I have tried to research the style but with no joy at all.

Does anyone have any ideas about approximate era, or even country of origin?

Any suggestions, wild guesses would be interesting.

dont know anything regarding Russian marks. But marks look russian to me.
Pictures might give responce.

Sorry, I used the instructions on the page 'how to add an image' http://www.925-1000.com/images.html

put the URL between the two [img], but when I went to Review the post I got four lines in red, before my post, all saying

"It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image."

I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Your spoon is from Russia, Moscow, 1878. The maker is Ivan Alexeev (Иван Алексеев), assay maker is Victor Savinkov (Виктор Савинков). This information is from catalog of Russian silver marks of Postnikova-Loseva.

What a story! How big must marks be to be recognized by you!
The spoon should on behalf of the marks look like a Russian spoon - but in Russia at no time existed spoons like that. It looks like a kichen- production made of several non fitting parts and got as an iceing some Russian punches. A total freak spoon.

Ubaranda´s informations are not quite correct. (PL is not always right)

The assayer is Viktor Savinsky not Savinkov 1873-1876 - but the marks are fake marks.

Please learn to post photos - one of the prerequisites to participate on this forum! Yes, there are some rules.....

Hi Zolotnik,
I have to apologise again (I just posted an apology on the Russian Silver forum where someone kindly re-posted this), but the photo of the Russian silver marks was from a different spoon, one which I asked aabout last year sometime. The problem with Imageshack is that if you click on a photo then it takes you out of the folder, and to the main gallery. The photo of the hall mark is in the main gallery.
Thank you very much for embedding the photos, for some reason I could not do it.

Zolotnik is absolutely right - this spoon is fake. But assayer "В.С" could be Viktor Savinsky, Veniamin Savinsky or Vladimir Smirnov...

Thanks for the contribution, and the obvious effort you've put into trying to identify the spoon, but as I tried to explain in my earlier post the photo with the Russian (fake) marks are from a different spoon, so that last photograph does not belong in the group. The 'Religious spoon' has no markings on it at all, and I have been over it extremely carefully with a loupe. I do apologise for the confusion, but it is a problem with the way the 'albums' are set out on Imageshack, and because I initially could not embed the pictures.
