Not sure if Joseph Smith & Sons fits this piece.

Postby suzyq4doug » Sat Mar 24, 2012 10:18 am

I have a lovely locket. It is Birmingham Sterling.

I am pretty sure the cursive "A" is 1975.

The maker is JS in a shield.

I can't find any info to see if Joseph Smith & Sons engraved silver that decade.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
The maker's mark relates to Joseph Smith & Sons (Birmingham) Ltd, manufacturing jewellers, incorporated in 1905 which various websites suggest dissolved around 2005.
My notes show a bracelet assayed in 1988 was attributed to the company and they may well have been making jewellery much later.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't find another JS that fit. Did you look at the "A". Looks like 1995 to me or could be 1950. I am new at this and really enjoying researching the marks.

Hello Susan

The images aren't too clear for older eyes but the shape surrounding the date letter looks like the one for 1975 to me.
Visit the Birmingham Assay Office website at http://www.theassayoffice.co.uk/ and enter the Early Silver Hallmark page Database Search then click on Date Letter to compare the mark on the locket with the full range.
Best of luck,

Mike
