HEWAT, Alexander (Grimwade p.545)

Postby MCB » Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:45 am

He married Elizabeth Barksdale at St Marylebone in 1798; both were from that parish
There is a document in 1800-1 (the document is undated but archived as these dates) for Alexander Hewat, son of John Hewat, Wheelwright applying for the freedom of the City of London by patrimony.
The London Directory of Professions & Trades 1811 records Alexander Hewat & Co, silver plate manufacturers of 12 King Street.
The 1841 and 1851 UK Census records for him have not been traced.
The 1861 UK Census shows him as a retired jeweller living with his brother Robert and family at 17 Colbrook Row, Islington.
His burial in 1867 aged 91 years was recorded at St James, St Pancras; his last address was 12 St Mary’s Row, Canonbury.
The National Probate Calendar for the Principal Registry of 1867 shows the value of his estate as under £30000.

Brothers Richard J & Alexander were both sons John Hewat. With that in mind and family records, I for one am satisfied that Alexander Hewat was in the Company of Wheelwrights.
