French jug "departements"

Postby zilverik » Sat Mar 03, 2012 6:24 am

Hi,

This French jug comes from the French country. Weight: 174 gr; high: 9,5 cm. Marks at the rim is a mans bearded head turning left with the number 6 left and 0 right. The marks underneath: crowned C, fleur the lis, bearded man with a 2 (=departements 1819-1838); worn mastermark crowned C P ?; very small mark near the centrepoint; initials M*S (former owner). To me the jug looks like it was a 18 century beaker before and than in the period 1818-1838 transformed into a jug with a handle. The handle is a little bit to big/heavy for this jug. It easely falls over. The way the handle is attached to the jug is not the quality work according to the overall quality (as to be seen inside the jug).

Regards,

Zilverik

Hi,
The bearded man mark is the gurantee mark for the French Provinces, in use during the period 1819-1838.
The figure 60 refers to the Department Pas-de-Calais and the cities Arras (E) and Saint-Omer (H).
Another mark of a bearded man (in a cut oval) is the mark for a silver fineness of .800 (poinçon de titre, 2ième titre), also used during the period 1819-1838 for the French Provinces.
The other marks are indeed 18th century marks, but I have no information of them.
Kind regards

Hi Zilver2,

Thank you for looking into these marks. The 18e century marks aren't to be found in Le Poincon des Provences Francaises (J. Helft). Yet it isn't Paris. It would be a miracle that someone knows these provincial marks.

Kind regards,

Zilverik
