Postby silvercrown » Sat Jan 14, 2012 1:43 pm

This object was won at an auction. It is by Reed & Barton. Is it a tea strainer. Thanks!

Hi Silvercrown,

Perhaps a burner that has become parted from its stand?

At first I though campher, then I realized it may have been used for menthol. Either way the single handle on the top seems very awkward.

I was thinking of the burners that fitted into food warmers. Below are a couple of examples.

Looks like the lamp/burner from a chafing dish or hot-water kettle to me too, agree that the cover seems like it might be awkward to use. Don't know about the U.K., but here in the U.S., it would have most likely used alcohol/spirit - clean-burning and odor-free.

Also meant to add that similar burners I've seen, had wire mesh rather than the perforated metal to contain the asbestos. Here are a couple of little excerpts:

Clearly, I had "1897" stuck in my silly blonde head - the second excerpt dates from 1912 (dohhh!).
