Scottish silver ladle? with odd hallmarks. Help please!

Postby cm82 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 9:26 am

Hello there

I have found your website to help answer a riddle that has been annoying the family for years. We have a small silver ladle (which we believe to be a punch ladle), that has been in the family for almost 4 generations. My great great gran got given it from the owner of a large house she used to work for. The family originates from Dumfries and Galloway and it has always been our belief that the ladle was indeed Scottish.

Now my dad has inherited the spoon we decided to try solve the riddle and find out where it is from. We have tried to source the hallmarks but to no avail. Can you please help us? I have attached a picture of the ladle in its entirety and a picture of the hallmarks on the reverse. It has a rather Fine P/J at the top of the spoon which we believe was the original owners initial?? I also placed the spoon next to my mobile to give you an idea of the scale.

Can anyone help us at all?

Many many thanks

Hi Cara.

Looks to me like a James Dixon silverplate mark.

I would agree with James Dixon on this one.

It is not Scottish Silver.
