Denmark, whale, (van lou)?

Postby karinagw » Mon Feb 06, 2006 12:43 am

Would like to find the genesis of the following piece:

Image

The marks:
Image

are clear as to the Denmark, whale (through a magnifier, it looks more specifically like an orca)....and then there's the crown which has engendered much discussion as to its interior verbiage. We all agreed that the first word is Van. The second word has been argued to be Lop, Lou, Lon, Loy, and Loo.

Help would be deeply appreciated. While, no doubt, one of you will say "Of course it's this", I haven't been able to track anything about it down except a query on another board about a smilar mark that didn't include the crown.

Moved?

Postby karinagw » Mon Feb 06, 2006 7:51 am

I don't know that the appropriate person will see this, but I was wondering why this was moved?

There was on the back a well-worn little sticker that said Sterling Silver on it...although I suppose someone could put a sticker on anything.

What, however, made one believe ffrom looking (I assume) at the images that it was Silverplate? You can tell that I am oh so knowledgeable about these things...

As a long-time collector of Scandinavian silver, have run across this whale mark before (though the crown trademark is new to me). Found on mid-20th century Danish silverplate, usually decorative items such as ashtrays, purse mirrors & combs, corkscrews & bottle stoppers, candleholders, etc., often with raised Dutch Renaissance inspired scenes similar to yours, sometimes on sleek Modern design pieces. Your piece would be marked with a "925" or "830" (sometimes followed by "S"), or a Danish assay mark if it was solid silver.
