Lars Ingstrom Pitcher / Sweden / 1961 / Questions ???

Postby hudsonharrington » Wed Dec 07, 2011 9:31 pm

Hey there folks,

My name is Hudson, this is my first post to the site and come bearing questions galore ! I've attached some pics below to help.

I am a collector / dealer of modernist Scandinavian design. I recently purchased a piece from Wright20 Auctions from there fall Scandinavian sale. The piece ( shown below ) is from a designer who seems to be somewhat of a historical ghost. I myself, along with many other Scandinavian collectors have never herd of Lars Engstrom before this auction. It was for the design which I purchased the piece and also due to the fact I was pretty sure I'd never see another one in my lifetime.

I'm somewhat new to the world of silver so please bare with me

The information on the internet regarding Scandinavian hallmark systems has proven somewhat helpful, but has still left me with quite a few questions.

1. Anyone out there ever herd of Lars Engstrom ???

2. I'm still unclear on the "S" in the Hexagon - Does this simply indicate Sterling - or does this just indicate a national legal silver content between 850 - 999 - or could this even have been used for silver plate ??? ( seem unlikely there be so many official national hallmarks on a piece of silver plated hollow ware ? )

3. The "A" Shape ( fourth mark in ) seems to be the City Code. From what I've found it seems to be Stockholm, but I could be WAY off.

4. Thank you SO MUCH in advance for taking the time to answer all of my questions and only hope in the near future I will be able to return the favor.

Take Care,

Hudson

What always amazes me is that people buy objects but not knowing what they have bought??? Then the questioning starts, what have I bought? I find that to be a rather risky business.
Anyway, about Lars Engström, a Swede who had a company "Guldsmycket, Engströn & Co in Stockholm Sweden. He/it was registered 1959-197X with the mark LGE. He was not one of the top 10 in Sweden, just an "ordinary man". That was the answer to question 1.

2. The S in the hexagon is the official Swedish control mark for silver indicating the purity of not less than 830/1000. It was implemented 1.1.1913. It has the same function as the three crown mark also called "cat's paw".
3. The fourth mark is the city mark for Stockholm, it is the face of Saint Erik.
4 You are so welcome ;-)

In addition, L9 is the year mark indicating the year 1961. The last mark is their trade mark.

Thanks Qrt.S,

Your information on the silver "S" hallmark was very insightful. I guess in hindsight, I should have perhaps rephrased my first question which is my main reason for posting to the forum...

Does anyone have, know of, or possess any images of Lars Engstrom's work.

Upon the start of researching this designer, I ended up on the swedac.se site. This was helpful in the context of dating his work, but it really provided no other information other than he was alive and lived in Sweden.

Seeing any other examples or discovering any known knowledge of other companies he may have designed for would be of great assistance.

Once again, thanks for the great info
