Postby mothermarysanto » Wed Oct 19, 2011 10:23 pm

Hello,

I am trying to help someone with this very old James Dixon & sons sugar scoop and dish/holder. Trying to get some information and possible date on it. Any help would be great. Please follow link below to photobucket to see pictures:

I noticed that this was made in Sydney. Only things I have seen have been made in England. Not sure if it is plated or not. Believe it has the sterling marker.

Thanks

Hi,
Not sterling but electro plated like said by Sylvacant; E.P.B.M. for Electro Plated Brittania Metal.
Please see: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_D.html
And see remark about ‘bugle’; the bugle mark first used in 1879
James Dixon & Sons ceased production in 1992
A. Saunders could be a retailer for James Dixon & Sons in Sydney
Sugar scoop in the form of a coal scuttle, made around 2nd quarter of the 20th century.

Regards,

Oel

I don't if this helps narrow anything down for you, but A Saunders jeweler is listed in business directories on George Street in Sydney between 1884 and 1929. In 1930 the business name changed to A Saunders Ltd.

Thank you all. That is all excellent information. And good thinking on the Saunders history
