Early London marks?..Help!

Postby jojo 1 » Mon Sep 26, 2011 4:19 pm

Hi there, new to the forum. I am a little stumped by the hallmarks on this jug, they are quite rubbed. Hopefully someone with more expertise can help.
The makers mark looks to be 'LI', but can't be sure and I cant find a match in reference books. It is a large gilt jug with what looks to be either a bone or
ivory handle. Can anyone help? Jo

I don't recognise the maker's mark and can't make out the date letter. The lion passant and leopard's head punches look to me like 17th century versions but the style of the jug seems much later than that. My eyesight is not the best and I am far from expert on holloware but I have to say I wonder whether the piece is "right". I had hung back from commenting in the hope that somebody might come up with a more positive view. Perhaps my reply will prompt another to give an opinion.

Hi Jo,

Welcome to the Forum.

I agree with agphile, to me the Leopard's Head and the Lion Passant have a kind of Dingeldein type look to them.

Hi there, thank you Agphile, Trev and Pat for your input! I have been a collector for a while now but was a little confused by these marks - so your ideas could well be spot on.
The only London date letters I could match with was either 1694 or 1696 - but could find no match for the maker. It has been tested and is sterling silver.
Thank you for taking the time to respond, it is much appreciated! Jo
