Hi Silverstork,

Silversmith mark: S with the 'all Seeing Eye’ above could be for: Schapmans - From the city Mechelen - Malines — Belgium.
Their workshop existed roughly between 1866-1920 at:
17 rue des Beggarts
17 rue des Moulins
32 en 22 rue Sainte Catherine
in Mechelen - Malines — Belgium.

I have some problem with the fineness mark 800 shown, which does not represent the original Belgium 2 (second) standard of 800 fineness being; A(argent=silver) 2 in a square with cut corners, used 1869-1942. I guess; Schapman made this for export and stamped it 800 for identification purpose only. Are there perhaps any more marks, you have not mentioned?

Regards,

Oel

Hello Oel, great thanks for your reaction,

I think its Schapman alright, but i cant find any additional markings. Its a surprise for me that its belgian silver, as well because of the 800 mark.

Many thanks

The 800 mark was used a lot in Belgium. It is not surprising to me.

Hi Zilverik,

Perhaps this is more useful and explains why some of us are a little surprised: unregistered Belgian silver standards, 1869-1942

Hello Oel,

Thank you for this overview about 800. These details are new to me. I am glad with this information.

Zilverik
