Unknown Maker Tumbler Kiddush

Postby progambla18 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 5:54 pm

I Have this tumbler or kiddush cup and I am unable to identify the maker. I know that the assay mark belongs to alexander romanov in 1889 and it is 875 silver from moscow, but i can not identify the maker. Any help would be great. Also how do i upload pictures.

Here are the instructions of how to upload pictures. Please read headline TUTORIALS (How to add an image) viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10

About your cup. This is not an easy case so I'm just providing a wild guess. To me the badly punched maker's mark looks like ПД----maybe (Latin PD). A master that comes close is Pavel Dimitrijev 1883-1887. But as you can see the cup is assayed in 1889 so there is a gap of 2 years. Of course the cup might have been assayed later but....? Another possibility would be Pierre Lusyen Dupen but he was more known as a jeweler.

Unfortunately there are still many unidentified masters in Russia.

Of course the mark could be something else. This is my opinion only.....as I said, a wild guess. Let's see if somebody else has better suggestions.

I know everything about the cup except for the maker. The first letter looks like the Pi symbol and the secong letter looks like a U. the Assay mark is A.P/1889 (Alexander Romanov) Its 84 Zolotniks, and it was made in moscow.

Fine and correct, but what you seem not know is the Cyrillic alphabet and the alternative that the maker's mark is up side down, which it is. Take a new good look

By the way Pi is a Greek letter not a Cyrillic letter and the Russians did not use Greek letters.

Have a very nice evening
