Large figural spoon - Swedish or Norway?

Postby arseleo » Tue Mar 29, 2011 1:51 pm

I am researching a large silver spoon with a figure holding a circle with a crown. 7.5" long, 2.4 oz. The crown looks like Swedish symbolic crown, the marks look Scandinavian but not exactly Swedish - no year mark, no state mark. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Great spoon!

Take a look at Thorvald Marthinsen at: http://www.925-1000.com/Fnorway_marks3.html#1

I've noted at similar spoon with an engraved date of 1945.

Trev.

And thanks again - I did some research on Th. Marthinsen and was able to find a piece with exactly the same mark. It was dated 1939.

I appreciate your help.

Oops, it looks like my previous reply did not post.

Anyway, it is not relevant now. Looks like it is fully identified - thank you for your help!

One of my favorite commemorative spoons, great symbolism in the strong figure rising from a broken chain.....issued for the liberation of Norway in 1945; suspect yours is a bit later since it doesn't have the usual lettering in the bowl. My smaller version (a bit under 5") has the very crisply embossed (die-struck rather than engraved) "NORGE 1945" in the center of the bowl, around the rim is, "BRUTT BLEV LENKER BÃ…ND OG TVANG" (broken were chains, ties and constraints), a line taken from Ibsen's Peer Gynt.
