Is it London & who is the maker?

Postby techsol » Fri Mar 18, 2011 5:04 am

Hi, I have recently aquired a tea caddy spoon which is hallmarked but with no town mark. In my opinion I would say it is a London hallmark for 1798, but I would be grateful for any more experienced views on this. The makers mark is very much like that attributed to either John Shea or Josiah Snatt, but both of these don't appear to have anything attributed to them prior to 1800, again any views on this would be most welcome.

Hi
Josiah Snatt entered his mark on the 10th Jan 1798 as a smallworker, it is thought that he worked till 1817, the date mark on this item looks to me like London 1798 so l would be quite happy to attribute this item to him
Regards
Nigel

Hi,

It's Snatt, a known maker of caddy spoons. He entered his mark at the London Assay Office on the 10th January 1798 from 4, Fan Street, Aldersgate. He is thought to have died in September 1817, which would confirm the dateletter of 1798, rather than the somewhat similar dateletter of 1818.
