Silver Hallmark SFW

Postby mormesher » Wed Mar 09, 2011 1:24 pm

Hi can anyone help with this query?
30 years ago I was fishing on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal as a boy. I found a Silver Cross that is quite large and very crude. It has the hallmarks for Birmingham with the date letter Y and a makers/importers mark of SFW. My assumptions were that it was lost by one of the original canal workers back in the late 1770's but i could be totally wrong. The cross looks quite old and even Celtic in design, which would support my theory based on the fact that a lot of Irish workers built the canal. I have uploaded a few photos if anyone can help me with this long time conundrum.

Many thanks

Hi Mike ~ Believe it was fairly new when you found it, looks like Birmingham 1973 to me.

Hi Cheryl, thanks for the response and I now feel a bit less emotional about the cross belonging to a hard working canal constructor in the 1770's who kissed it every morning noon and night!

I would still like to reunite it with its proper owner though, but again many thanks for your knowledge and feedback.

Mike
