Trophy

Postby JeffH » Wed Jan 19, 2011 4:38 pm

Hello -

I've been unable to identify the maker's mark on this cup/trophy. It has a Victorian duty stamp and hallmarks for London/sterling/1860-61. Any help with the maker would be appreciated!

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm not 100% sure because I don't have a copy of their mark to hand, but I suspect that is the mark of Thomas Dee & Sons.

One of the finest London silversmiths of the period, they were established c.1827 by Thomas William Dee and John Fargues at 8, Sherrard Street, Golden Square, Soho.

The business stayed in the Dee family until the death of Louis Dee on the 23rd August 1884, aged 52 years. The business was then assigned to Leuchars & Son, who in turn were assigned to Asprey & Co. in 1888.

Hopefully someone will confirm the mark.

I would agree, a similar piece with the same mark having gone through my hands recently, Thomas William, Henry & Louis Dee, whose mark was registered in 1859.

John
