Apostle spoon help?

Postby boardmanservices » Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:43 pm

I have a spoon that was given to me by my mother and father. My fathers mother collected spoons and she had this one. It is a small spoon measuring 4 and 5/8 of an inch long. The figure on the top of the spoon handle appears to be a man wearing a cape. He is holding a key. At the base of the spoon handle is another figure. I cannot determine the sex of this figure. It does appear to be naked. Directly below this figure is the face of a person wearing a crown. On the back of the spoon handle the image of the top figure is of his backside. The bottom of the handle has an very similar image of the front with the same individual standing above a face wearing a crown. Also on the back of the spoons are the hallmarks. On the base of the handle where it meets the spoon is the mark, BM. On the spoon itself are the marks of a leaf, .925, and a letter I cannot make out. I am interested in determing the age of the spoon. Thank you very much for taking the time to look at my spoon. Any information will be much appreciated.

Unknown German maker — maybe from Hanau?

Hello »boardmanservices«

Welcome to the Forum.

The spoon is an imported spoon, »BM« marked = Importers mark, assayed: Chester, J = 1909.

Importer was »BM« = Berthold Müller & Son; an importer of German silverwares in the UK.

Kind regards silverport
