Pipe Ashtray

Postby kahlheim » Sun Jan 02, 2011 1:48 pm

Hello. I am new to the forum. I have an old pipe ashtray and I am not sure if it is silver plated or silver. I was trying to post a picture of the stampings but the board limit has been reached. The stampings are a castle tower, a W and a crown. If anybody could ID, I would appreciate it.

Hello »kahlheim«

Welcome to the Forum.

Please read the »Posting Requirements« - I’m still wondering that many hundreds per year don’t read it:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10

There is also included a brief tutorial »How to add Images«:

I personally use »tinypic« - with their offer you could also decrease the files to a reasonable size.

Please let the images visible as long as ever possible — thank you there fore!

Kind regards silverport

Hello Keith

One of the basics in Northern America is: If the item isn’t marked with »925« or »STERLING«, then it’s »Plated«.

Well, there are some exemptions, when it is made e.g. before 1860 — time of »COIN« silver.

If you take the time, to read former topics, then you would get some more experiences.

Yours ashtray is »Plated« - for sure; you could see the basic material, a Nickel-silver-alloy.

Please read: http://www.925-1000.com/a_platenumbers.html

Well, that is basic information on European (German, France, Russian) »Plated« theme.

I couldn’t tell you, who were the maker — the maker’s mark I don’t know. But our American Contributors I think could assist you well.

Kind regards silverport
