Should I clean it or leave it alone?

Postby CW.Smith » Wed Dec 22, 2010 4:55 pm

Hello, I recently purchased this locket at a local antique shop. The clerk didn't know much about it, but said a good polish would clean it up, and that I shouldn't worry about ruining the finish as the rose color was "inlaid". Needless to say, I'd like to speak to an expert (that's you!) before I go anywhere near cleaning/polishing products. Thanks in advance!

The rosecolour is most likely rose-gold-plate on the sterling base. The piece also appears to have been laquered. Cleaning will be difficult at best as the oxidation appears to have "creeped" under the edges where the coating has flaked, so you may end-up with something that look pretty good but for the dark circles left.

I would leave it be until it can be worked on by someone who has the knowledge to do it properly. Otherwise, be very judicous with the polish so as to retain the frosted finish and best of luck.

Best regards,
