Possible Stolberg Wernigerode 12 Loth Spoon

Postby agsearch » Thu Dec 16, 2010 8:17 pm

Please help me identify this spoon. This is an 8 1/2" long silver spoon. It is marked with the number 12, and an elk or stag and two curved lines. Does the #12 mean that this was made in Prussia or Germany in the 18th and 19th century and it is made of .750 silver. Does the elk represent the city of Stolberg-Wernigerode? And does anyone know what the two curved lines mean? Thank you for your help!

Hallo agsearch
it is an interesting mark, but I think it is not Wenigerode.
It looks more like Grodno or Hirschberg, but I am not sure.

Thank you Theoderich for your quick reply and for the information.
I have the "Old Silver" book which shows a mark like the stag, elk mark but it states that this is from Stolberg-Wernigerode and from the 18th century.
I have no knowledge of the towns, cities or provenances that you speak of = Grodno or Hirscheberg.
Can you direct me to see some of their marks?
Or can you tell me that I am correct that this is Prussian or German? Or....
Made in the 1700's?
750 Loth Siver?
Kind Regards and thanks for sharing!

Hirschberg (pl. Jelenia Góra)
there I have only older marks - looks very different from the marks in the 19. century.

Thank you both for your information and insight into the origin of my spoon.
Some pictures I could access and some sites said that the pictures "did not exist" but I still received some very relevant information about the spoon and the period of time from which it was made.
So thanks again!
