Would appreciate the help with the hallmarks on this tiny locket (about 5/8" or 18mm wide). The hallmarks are the lion, what I believe to be a lower case "u", and an anchor. Haven't been able to locate a maker's mark on this piece - does anyone know if the shape of the cross has a particular name ? (like St. George's cross for instance.....)

It is a similar cross to the Maltese Cross, but not an exact match. As for a date - without getting an enlarged photo of the hallmarks, I would hazard a guess at Birmingham 1895 (as I think the "u" is actually a "v"). Try looking at the Birmingham date letters contained in this very web site. As for a maker - what is that "squiggle" thing just underneth the date / town / lion passant hallmarks?

I concur with Waylander in thinking the date letter is a v indicating 1895. The image you supplied is not particularly sharp but I think the two letters under tha hallmarks are the makers initials. the first letter looks like an S but I cannot make ot the second clearly. Please have a look through a loupe and advise.

I will have another look and get back to you - may take me a few days to get back to the piece again. I'll try to post a clearer photo of the marks at that time...I looked and looked at this piece and never saw the maker's mark until you folks pointed it out! Happy New Year!
