Hart, Son, Peard & Co. - London & Birmingham

Postby dognose » Thu Aug 05, 2010 5:13 pm

Hart, Son, Peard & Co. was the amalgamation of Joseph Hart & Son and Peard & Jackson that occured in 1866-7, but the link between the two firms is an earlier one.

The older of the two firms was that of Joseph Hart & Son. Hart had started in business c.1840 and in 1853 he took on a young man from Devon, Thomas Peard. Peard left the employ of Hart in 1860 to start on his own account, but was soon joined by Frederick Jackson and the new firm was known as Peard & Jackson. In 1866-7 the two firms united under the banner of Hart, Son, Peard & Co.. By this time Joseph Hart appears to have retired and his son Charles taken over his role. The new firm opened a factory in Birmingham, the Grosvenor Works, that was supervised by Charles Hart. Thomas Peard ran the London side of the business and Frederick Jackson the firms finances.

All three businesses entered marks with the London Assay Office and the new firm entered marks at Birmingham also.

It would appear that although the firms came together in 1866-7, they still opperated seperately for some time.

On the 1851 UK Census Joseph Hart, ironmonger, is shown at 53-4 Wych Street London aged 63 years and born in Walsall, Staffordshire. Further research reveals he was the son of William and Sarah Hart and he was christened at St Matthew's Church, Walsall in 1787.
Walsall was a town noted, inter alia, for its chain making industry where perhaps Joseph learned the iron trade.
Charles Hart was born in London in 1814 evidence that Joseph along with his Staffordshire born wife (also) Sarah had been in the capital from a relatively early age.
Joseph with his wife aged 72 appear again on the 1861 Census at 58 Clifton Road East, Marylebone, London. He still described himself as an ironmonger. That was the last entry for them.
