NS&CO Ladle

Postby SilverSurfer » Tue Jul 20, 2010 12:53 am

Might someone be able to identify the maker of a fiddle pattern gravy ladle, c.1835, 15.3 cm in length, 21 grams weight, and exhibiting the maker's and retailer's marks below?

As opposed to the very silver-plate appearance of the NS&CO mark, I believe the ladle is more likely constructed of coin silver, and despite its featherweight construction, it has survived in remarkably good condition. Anyone recognize the maker/retailer? Thx!

Not at home to double-check, but believe that's Norton, Seymour & Company of Syracuse, NY (1854-57).

Thank you, Cheryl, seems to be a fit. I didn't find a matching mark scanning here or in Rainwater or Ensko, but after your tip I read the Rainwater text indicating a match, also indicating that the company made solid silver items. Perhaps the moderators might want to add this mark to this Forum's listing, though I realize the quality leaves a bit to be desired? Thanks again, Cheryl!

There is a Fenner Williams who was a jeweler at 52 Friendship in Providence, Rhode Island over the period that Norton & Seymour were in business. He's at least a fair possibility for the retailer in this case.
