Many thanks for the reply Buckler.
However, I'm not convinced about the colonial theory. The incuse duty mark looks right to me, apart from there is no cartouche. I have seen worn George III leopard's (leopart's) head marks that look very similar to this one. But perhaps the most important clue is that the date letter matches the incuse duty mark. I believe this mark was only used between 1784 and 1786. Would a colonial silversmith bother to get that right? It seems unlikely to me but I would be happy to be proved wrong.
