Need help with mark on cross please

Post by fox »

HI,

Can anyone help me with this mark on the back of a Modernist sterling cross.
It is AB with a circle in the center in which appears to be a chalice.
Possibly Scandinavian or Eastern Europe? Any help much appreciated.

That is the trademark for Antaya Brothers, Inc of Attleboro, Massachusetts. I know they were in business in the 1960's, but I have not looked into them any further.

Hi Thanks everyone.
I looked up Antaya Bros and their mark is written ANTAYA STERLING.
I found they made religious and military pieces.
However, I can't find anything with AB on it?

Further to above, is it possible the chalice mark has any significance?
I believe I did see this cross once with the initials standing for the name of the designer.
Something foreign is all I can remember!

You have posted a exceptionally clear image an Antaya Brother's trademark that according to the U S Patent and Trademark Office's records has been in use since 1961 which should help some with dating your piece. The portion of their trademark that might look like a chalice is loosely described in the trademark registration information as the resemblance of a steer's head.

The Antaya family has been in the jewelry trade in Attleboro, Massachusetts since at least the early 1880's. The Antaya Brothers are first listed in Attleboro directories in 1953 for sure and no earlier than 1951 which does not necessarily conflict with the year Pat has given for the company's founding.

I think it's very well done medal.
