Animal's (cat's?) head mark on napkin ring

Postby Sebastian » Thu Jun 10, 2010 11:57 am

Please can someone tell me about this maker's mark on a 13-lotig silver napkin ring. It looks to be a cat's head.

Thanks for the information that this animal's head mark is the Gmund assay office mark, a unicorn's head. There isn't another mark on the napkin ring though, so it seems that either a maker's mark was not obligatory, or it has been worn away.

I have seen many of this mid 19. th. Century unicorn's head - marks - but never with a makersmark.
I have also seen some older Schwäbisch Gmünd unicorn- marks with a makersmark.
