Sanderson & Son entered their mark, 'S & S' contained within an oblong with clipped corners, at the Edinburgh Assay Office in 1842.

Hello Trev,

The Edinburgh AO website identifies two 19th century firms with the name of John Sanderson & Son, the one you have identified as registering an "S&S" mark in 1842 (incidentally Edinburgh notes they were active until 1877) and another registering a "JS&S" mark in 1861 active only until 1862.
The website notes that the firm registering the 1842 mark should not be confused with the one registering in 1861 because the latter were lapidiaries and yet the 1851 advertisement shows the firm's primary activity was exactly that.
A possible explanation is that the AO's records are insufficient to know whether the 1842 registration and that in 1861 were by the same people. Less likely the possibility that for a short period there were two lapidiary businesses in the city with the same name.
This leaves the chance that the firm placing the 1851 advertisement actually registered two marks.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Yes, I went with the earlier registration due to the date of publication of the advertisement, and agree the two firms are probably one of the same.

I suspect most of the larger Scottish establishments could be described as lapidiaries at this time, due to the huge popularity of the Scottish pebble jewellery industry, it was, I'm sure, a lucrative market not to missed out on.
