That's English for you mate. We yanquis need the accent as a cue so as not to rhyme the word with; fate, date, rate, bait, or (especially) mate.

Both the spellings "mate" and "maté" are used in English. The acute accent on the final letter is likely added as a hypercorrection, and serves to indicates that the word and its pronunciation are distinct from the common English word "mate".

To be perfectly honest, until now, I did think it was properly spelled in Spanish with the "'". Thanks for cluing us (or at least, me) in.
