Peter Behrens Statement on Culture of Dinning and Objects

Postby silverport » Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:40 pm

Hello

It is maybe from general interest to get knowledge from a statement on Dining Culture of the famous Peter Behrens.

Transscription:

(Seine Adresse)

Wenn die Geschmackskultur eines Volkes am
deutlichsten durch das Aussehen der Dinge
deren wir uns täglich bedienen, bezeichnet
wird, so sollte die moderne Bewegung,
die eine Annäherung von Kunst und In-
dustrie verspricht, und deren Ansätze,
nämlich Geschmack in große Kreise zu tragen,
gewiß anzuerkennen sind, jedoch mehr
wie bisher ihr Interesse auch dem Tafel-
gerät zuwenden.

(Header with his Address)

While the cultural sense of taste from a Nation is
visualized by the appearances of objects
which they use daily; the same could be
observed also in the modern Movement,
which promises an approximation of Art and
Industry; and in their way to find solutions
for big communities, by implantation of taste,
they are surely laudable. However, also they should do
more as they’ve done until now, and turn their attention to
Tableware.

Source: Catalogue XXXV (1914) of »Alpacca versilberte und unversilberte Besteckwaren, Hotel- und Tafelgeräte« (Alpacca electro silver plated and non plated cutlery, hotel and dinning goods), p. XX. (Date of statement is actually unknown to me; but I guess, around 1904-1905)
