Napolean Cecile was again brought before the judge at Montreal Police Court on Thursday last, charged with attempted watch stealing at Henry Birks & Sons, Ltd., and after further evidence had been given, showing that the accused had tried to steal a very valuable gold watch out of Birks’ window, from which a number of watches had been stolen recently, Cecile was committed to stand trial in the Court of Special Sessions.

J. Earl Birks, of the jewelry firm of Henry Birks & Sons, Montreal, who has left that city to become vice-president and managing director of Ryrie Bros., Ltd., Toronto, was entertained at a farewell luncheon on May 16 by the members and past members of the Board of Management of the Montreal Central Y. M. C. A. in recognition of 12 years’ service. A presentation of a handsome reading lamp was made by A. D. Anderson, treasurer of the association.

Seven members of the staff of Ryrie Birks, Ltd., of Toronto recently completed a term of 25 years of continuous service with the firm thus becoming members of the Ryrie- Birks “ Old Guards." The firm presented a handsome sterling silver tray with an appropriate inscription to five of them, two others receiving in preference solid gold watches. The seven members of the “ Old Guard ” are : J. J. Allward, B. Bedford , A. E. Cuff, S. J. Moore, A.V. Elmes, Miss M. H. Thompson and Miss M. L. Davison.

William Henry Lavers, for 20 years store manager of Henry Birks & Sons, Ltd., Montreal, died on Tuesday, March 29, after an illness of six months. He was born in Montreal in 1864 and entered the service of Henry Birks & Son as a messenger at the age of 14. He was promoted to the position of store manager when about 30 years of age, and gained the liking and esteem of a large circle of friends. Mr. Lavers was a Mason of the 32d degree and a member of several fraternal orders and social clubs. He is survived by a widow, five daughters and four sons.
