Unhallmarked knife and fork

Postby GeorgeS » Sun Feb 14, 2010 9:38 pm

Hi all,

My mother recently passed away and when I was going through her things I found a knife and fork set with a pattern I have never seen. In addition, I cannot find a hallmark on either piece, simply "STERLING" and "16" (both on the "handle" where the monogram is traditionally placed). The "1" in "16" is the same on both, but almost looks hand carved (quite odd, but I don't think it is a hallmark).

Anyway, I have attached a picture of the pieces and hope that you can tell me the maker and pattern.

Thank you! And please excuse my terrible English (Italian native).

Hi George,

Welcome to the Forum.

Patience is a virtue, many members are only occasional visitors and you may have to wait a while for an answer.

This is not guaranteed, but in my own experience with these sets, and likewise for others that I have observed, carving sets have been typical bridal gifts. The manufacturer is not necessarily marked and the patterns are even more remote.

You may someday by chance come across an advertisement for this set that is helpful for identifying it. Or better yet, the original box that it came in may turn up with the informtion you are looking for in it. Otherwise, for now, you may have to settle for the pleasure of owning an attractive carving set that has a family connection.

In cases like this I prefer to be incorrect, but we'll see.

Thank you both for your replies and the wonderful information! I collect 18th and 17th century silver myself, and have had a nice time "lurking" around the forums.

Thanks again!
