Help dating Napkin Rings Please

Postby lupitt » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:24 am

Hello

I have a set of 4 napkin rings by Payton Pepper & Co. The base of the box has a sticker saying 'Birmingham 1857' The 1857 has been crossed out and replaced with 1871. From what I can find out about PP&Co, both of these dates would be too early.

I think the date letter could be 1901 but I'm absolutely no expert in that field!

Any opinions gratefully received.

Lucy

Hi Lucy,

I believe that's 1895.

Hello Lucy,

That is 1895. Both 1851 and 1857 should have a duty mark, which disappeared in 1889. Also, as a general rule, the Birmingham Anchor was horizontal until 1900, when it became vertical.
