What was this used for

Postby moalt » Mon Oct 19, 2009 1:26 am

Hi

I would like to know what this fork may have been used for. as you can see it is fairly intricately engraved, the engravings are on both sides but one side is more worn that the other. It has no markings, is silver plate, some wearing to the tines. It has been suggested that it could be a pickle fork, a pickled egg fork, part of a serving kit for large roasts or even a hair piece and has also been suggested that it could be American or indeed of Celtic origin. So am a bit confused here, any help would be greatly appreciated

Length is 13cm or 5", width at the handle is 5cm or just under 2", weight 50 grams.

Regards

Melissa

I believe these are usually called bread forks.

Thankyou for your response, very much appreciated, much more than any of the antique dealers that I have shown it to here in Canberra!

Are you able to indicate American, British or possible a decade here. Am doing genealogy for my mother who turns 90 next month and she unearthed it out of her treasure trove, but she can't remember it being used whilst she was growing up or in her grandmother's house.

Anything is appreciated

I'll use the old excuse: "That's not really my area".
However, I'll take a guess at America c.1910.
I look forward to seeing how wrong I am.
