Help with maker please

Postby clown123 » Wed Sep 16, 2009 6:10 pm

A delightful waiter from 1757. I can't seem to make out the maker's mark. Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

What letters do you see?

The first, from what I can make out, appears to be a 'T' and from the shape of the punch, Thomas Parr II looks possible, but the second letter appears unclear.

Any chance of a better close up?

My first guess would be Elias Cachart [Grimwade #557], mark is upside down.

I took these with a micro lens. I doubt that I could get any better images...let's see.

Any possibility that it's Ebenezer Coker?

Yes, Grimwade mentions a lobed mark for Ebenezer Coker entered 24/5/1745. Also mentions his chief production as candlesticks and salvers. Since the lobed mark isn't shown, he would be my second guess.

Weighing everything up, I think it has to Ebenezer Coker, the letters look good but the outline is different to the one illustrated in Grimwades, but Grimwade does make mention of 'Another in lobed punch 24-5-1745', and it looks like this must be it.

From memory, I cannot remember seeing Elias Cachart's mark on anything but flatware, whereas Coker was a known maker of salvers.

So I'm with Coker and Grimwade's unillustrated mark.

Sorry about the overlap, it looks like salmoned and I are in agreement.
