Old Augsburg Dish / Salt Cellar? What is it.

Postby jackk » Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:23 pm

I picked up today an old Augsburg small dish with three figural mounts of a man, woman, and a boy. It looks like a salt cellar, but I have a feeling that original purpose was different. Any idea what was this used for.
Thank you!

It looks like a Salt Cellar.
It is not a milk - and fpr sugar it is to small.

Is there a makers mark?

Thanks. Salt cellar is the first thing that comes to mind, but I was hoping that there may be some significance to the three figures. After all, it may be just a decoration.
There is only Augsburg city mark, no makers mark. If I am correct this will date to early XVIII century.

according to my look in Rosenberg it is the serie where A is 1781 to 1783.

Thanks, but I was sure that the letter A was started at the beginning of XVIII century. Was I wrong?

No that is correct - but not this serie. That was another serie. The A from 1735 1736 cannot be mistaken for the A on your piece.

Another thing, stile is defenitely Louiz Size/empire. And that was later in time. Without the mark I would placed (by look) later in history. Around 1800.

Hello, just wondering whether this could be a more recent Hanau piece. Best wishes, Bahner

Bahner, I am 99% sure this is not Hanau made piece. Again, I do not claim to be an expert, but during last 15 years I have handled many Hanau and old German silver pieces. This one I am putting in the old silver drawer. :)

A single mark from Augsburg, especially this "A" looks (sorry to say so) really like Neresheimer, Hanau.
