Birmingham sterling circa 1903 unidentified maker's mark

Postby mccracken » Sat Jun 13, 2009 4:27 pm

I have a wonderful teaset, art nouveau with tulips. I can't find the maker. See photo below for hallmark. Thanks.

I'm afraid I don't know the maker, but what a beautiful teapot! Is that a little heart shaped hinge?
Please could you post a photo of the cream jug and sugar bowl.

Hello and welcome.

That is a fine looking teapot.

The book "The Silversmiths of Birmingham and their Marks 1750-1980" attributes that mark to N. & E. Spittle.
They entered that mark in May of 1904. (Back then Birmingham and Sheffield changed their date marks in June.)

They are described as "Art metalworkers" but no other information is given.

Pat.

Thank you so much for the information regarding Spittle. I had the most difficult time trying to find those marks.
Yes it is a wonderful set and the lid has hinged heart as well as heart shaped spout. Really unique.

I posted a couple of more photos of the teaset on my photobucket account because I can not seem to get the size correct for these boards and don't want to get in trouble ( ;
Thank you again for the help!
