The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh have produced a searchable database of the records of all silver makers registered at the Edinburgh Assay Office since records began (includes records from Glasgow):

It takes a few minutes of experimentation with the search options to get the best out of it - the results are amazing and include photos of the original marks taken from the punches submitted for registration, sometimes showing several for the same maker.
