What-is-it question CLIII.

This lamp was designed by Josef Hoffmann for Wiener Werkstatte of Vienna Austria c.1904.

Where would this lamp have been used ?

Unless there was some sort of contract involved, I suppose you could use it anywhere you wished. . .

I would probably favor it as a wall sconce.

And it is silver? The only lamp work I have seen of Hoffman's was in beaten copper.

Hello Wev.

Forgot to mention it is silverplated.
Was meant to sit just like in the picture. Gets it's name from what it is placed on.

Here is another lamp designed by Josef Hoffmann for Wiener Werkstatte.
This lamp is made of sheet iron that is painted white.

Interesting idea about a bookcase, but that's not what we are looking for here. The picture above does not show what it is ussually resting on.
In this picture it does appear to be sitting on top of a bookcase.

What this lamp was meant to sit on is more expensive than a bookcase.
The outside is made of wood, but I would not call it a piece of furniture.

Don't suppose it is meant to sit on a piano, is it? That is wood, but not really furniture... (::warm smile::).

Well done Mizzllat.

Yes, it is a piano lamp.
