What-is-it-question CXLVIII

Postby 2209patrick » Tue Apr 21, 2009 5:36 pm

This bowl is made of maplewood mounted in silver and silver-gilt with enamel.
Measures 13.25 inches ( 33.6 cm.) in diameter.
Made by Omar Ramsden, London, 1932.

This is a modern, larger version of the pieces that were produced during the Middle Ages.
What is it called ?
Clue: Trev provided the definition for our Illustrated Silver Glossary.

Will add that Ramsden was well-known for this form.

A very fine example, is it in burl? The pattern reminds me of the Dagda version.

Hi all.

Omar Ramsden (1873-1939) reinterpreted many ideas in historic silver.
He was well known for this form that he revived from the Middle Ages.

The central boss is engraved and enamelled with the arms of the Goldsmiths Company.
The chased decoration includes eight crowned leopard heads.

The name of this bowl comes from an old German word Ma'sa', meaning a spot, in reference to the spotted grain.
