Please help to indentify silversmith mark

Postby halyva » Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:21 pm

Please help me to identify silversmith based on this mark. The set is French with Minerva head stamped on the handle. The blade has this silversmith mark that I cannot identify. In the rectangle or square it has P some kind of symbol B. Sorry for not too clear pictures. Thank you all in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The handles of your knifes are silver, but the blades will be plated.

The hallmarking regulations in France are strict, maker's marks on silver must be contained within a lozenge, and since 1860 maker's marks on silverplated wares must be contained within a square. The fact that your blades are marked with a square also indicates that the blades are of French manufacture and are not imported as imported plated items are subject to different marking.

Hello and welcome.

The mark looks similar to a silverplate mark used by Pierre Bezou of Paris ( c.1913 - c.1951 ).
Below is their silver mark in a lozenge.

Not wishing to throw a cat amongst the pigeons but the mark as displayed looks like two 'B's and not PB..... albeit the first B is a little faint but certainly when examined carefully on your pic I see B and B.
Best wishes, Mike.
