Can anyone advise re this maker - see marks - did Jonathon Bateman ever make anything with his own name stamp - I believe he died that year.

Hi,
Jonathan Bateman did not make anything with just the mark "IB". The Batemans at that time were Peter & Jonathan, so you will only see PB IB marks - and there are several of them.

IB is a very common mark for the period. I would suggest the most likely is John Blake, but others may have a different opinion.

Hello Kiwikid,
As Admin advises the image of the marks is a little small to positively see there's no dot (pellet) after the letter I. If there is a pellet several makers are possible; if not John Blake (Grimwade 1151), as Tongtwister suggests, is most likely.

IB is also found as the main marker of the top spring hinged tongs of the late eighteenth century. Many people attribute this mask to John Buckett but I have no idea why !
It's another unresolved mystery !
