Need Help with Mark FN&S on Fiddle Small Forks

Postby Jgonch » Sun Feb 15, 2009 11:52 pm

These antique forks are 5 3/4" long. The maker's mark is a FN & S BP and some symbol. I have attached 2 pictures for your review. I think they are silverplate but they may be solid silver. I have tried to research the maker's mark but cannot find anything on this mark. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello.

Looks like British silverplate marks.
The letters "BP" stand for "British Plate" which is a form of nickel silver. This is the base metal under the silverplate.

Not sure who used the FN & S mark.
A good possibility is Francis Newton & Sons Ltd., Portobello Works, Portobello Street, Sheffield, England (founded c.1906).

Pat.
