Silver repairs

Postby bathrick » Thu Feb 12, 2009 11:49 am

Over the years I have picked up more than a few coin silver spoons with dented bowls, bent handles, etc. Anyone have any suggestions on resources to learn some simple techniques for repairing these problems? Videos or books?

I occasionally use a rawhide mallet to gently pound out dents in spoon bowls, with a piece of rounded wood supporting the inside the bowl (such as a broom knob). I suppose someone will call me out on that practice, but so be it.

Salmoned,

If you're getting satisfactory results - great! There are times when a steel hammer should be used to tap out difficult pinpoint dents, but that's best handled by a restoration specialist. BUT, even before you use a rawhide mallet, check for repairs because you don't want to open a solder seam.

Bent handles can usually be manipulated back into their origional curve with finger pressure, please do not flex the shaft back and forth. Bowls that are slightly dented are usually collected "as is" since the dents are from daily use. Dimples do need an expert to planish them out without disfiguring the bowl.

Hi All,

This could be of interest and perhaps helpful before we give silver a work over / face lift.
