Spurious Marks on English Silver

Postby admin » Mon Feb 02, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi, I've recently stumbled upon an obscure article, written for an American trade journal in 1899, that documents the London Goldsmiths' Company's 1898 seizure of antique silver forgeries and the spurious marks stamped on them.

Trev (dognose) has been kind enough to supply a background essay to complement the article.

Article and essay can be viewed at.

Enjoy!

About ten years there was a warning that a large number of silver articles bearing eighteenth century English hallmarks were coming from Thailand - and were of very good quality. The main problem with them, I was told , was that unlike most forgers someone with real knowledge of marks and styles was behind it.

I never saw any of these.

Which leaves three possibilies

My informant was incorrect. He was normally a very reliable man.
The scam was stopped before it started
Or, horrible thought they are so good no-one has picked them up yet.

Does anyone recall or know anything about these ?
