DAVIS

Birmingham

An inquest was held at Birmingham on May 30 on the body of a man named Davis, a jeweller. For seven or eight years he had suffered from gout, and had tried all sorts of remedies. It was stated that his employers had given him notice that his place would be filled if he could not resume work by a certain date, and as a last effort he purchased a supply of gout-pills, and swallowed more than the prescribed quantity. The medical evidence showed that the pills were frequently used for gout, but as the deceased was suffering from another complaint in addition they would not be suitable. Death was due to gastritis and general inflammation.

M. EVANS

64, Northampton Street, Birmingham

Robbing an Employer. — Joseph Slater, jeweller's clerk, living at the back of 33, Spencer Street, Birmingham, was placed in the dock last month, on a charge of stealing four gold bracelets, three pairs of earrings, one brooch, three pins, and a cross, of the value of £15, the property of his employer, Mr. M. Evans, manufacturing jeweller, 64, Northampton Street. The prosecutor stated that he had lately missed articles of jewellery of the value of upwards of £50. He gave information to the police, with the result that Detective-inspector Ore arrested the accused. The whole of the articles were found to have been pledged at various pawn-shops in the town. Prisoner pleaded guilty. Mr. Evans said that he had employed the prisoner since February last. He then bore an exceedingly good character. His parents were respectable people, and the accused had had a good example set him. Prisoner said that he had to superintend a funeral, and to do this he had to borrow money to purchase various articles. The man who lent him the money had pressed him for it, and in order to repay him he gave way to the temptation offered him. The Stipendiary said he would impose the most lenient punishment he could — three month's imprisonment, with hard labour.

WALDEN

Birmingham

A Birmingham jeweler known as Walden has apparently been made a victim of the old duplication trick since he has reported to the Leeds police the loss of a bag containing $25,000 worth of diamonds. Walden left his gems at the Midland Railway’s luggage room and later presented his withdrawal ticket and took the bag away. When opened it contained a brick, empty bottle, keys and newspapers. In some way the bag had substituted for his own while in the railroad luggage room.

A Medallist that is coming to the front in Birmingham lately is Mr. James A. Restall, of St. Martin's Place, Broad Street. He was selected by the Cyclists' Touring Club to produce their new badge, of which he has produced several thousands. The club contains over 22,000 members, each of whom is supposed to possess one of the club badges in silver. He has also been successful in agricultural and poultry show work, and altogether is turning out a medallist of the very first order. He was an apprentice of Messrs. T. & J. FRANK COLE

Birmingham

Plaque for Centenarian Silversmith

Mr. Brian Bridge, general secretary of the 3,800 strong National Union of Gold, Silver and Allied Trades, travelled to Birmingham on 27th October especially to present a sterling silver commemoration plaque to Frank Cole, a retired silversmith who was celebrating his 100th birthday.

Mr. Cole has been a union member for 75 years and Mr. Bridge said: "I think he is probably the oldest member any union has. He is certainly the oldest we've ever had".

Mr. Cole worked all of his life in Birmingham.

PURDOM & BOYD

Birmingham

R. E. Boyd, of the firm of Purdom & Boyd, manufacturing opticians, Birmingham, England, and J. H. Marlow, a retail optician, of Harrogate, England, were in St. Louis the last week in May, looking over our World's Fair, They were welcome callers among the trade here, and expressed themselves as more than delighted with the wonderful exposition at Forest Park. Both gentlemen were of the opinion that it was the greatest they had ever seen, and well worth their long trip to see, They were on an extended tour of America, and said they were delighted with the Great West and her great central city.
