Please help identfy maker from hallmarks

Post by hinders »

I wonder if you can help me.

I have a pocket watch that has some hallmarks.

I know the meaning of 3 of the hallmarks.
The hallmarks tell me that the City is Chester (left hallmark), it is sterling silver (top hallmark), and the year is 1893 (right hallmark).

My problem is I am struggling to find out who the maker is (AW). At first I thought it was made by American Waltham, but the makers mark for them is AWCo, this doesn't match my AW mark, also the case is marked Chester, so this leads me to thing it is a British or European make.

Has anyone seen the AW makers mark before?

Do you know whose mark AW is thus telling me the maker of my watch?

I hope you can help.

I appreciate any help or information given.

Thanks!

I'm afraid I can't help you with AW
However, whoever he is, he is probably only the maker of the case, not the movement. As I understand, there were usually various stages in the production and the final watch was assembled from different components.

Albert Waterfall - Watchcase Maker of 15 Hertford Terrace Coventry England seems a likely candidate for your case. His dates are between 1886 and 1901.

See page 52 - The Compendium of Chester Gold & Silver Marks 1570-1962 (From the Chester Assay Office Registers) by M H Ridgway & P T Priestley - Antique Collectors Club 2004.

My apologies, i sent you a whole page of info that would have probably helped you, but unfortunately the site won't allow it. so to be safe i will just say that, it could be A.Wherle and if you have a chance web search his name and perhaps look up AW Hallmarks on MSN's search engine. There that should keep them from sending me another email.

So sorry,
Shelley
