unknown maker - sugar tongs

Postby Tongtwister » Mon Nov 03, 2008 10:32 am

Hi all,

Can anyone help with these tongs. I'm stumped! From the style etc. I would date them at c1780 - 1784, probably London but possibly Newcastle or Exeter.

All ideas welcome

It looks similar to Jason Holt's mark, but not close enough for comfort.

Could you please possibly post a few pics of the makers mark as it is a little indistinct..... Best wishes, Mike.

Hi Mike,

The attached picture shows 4 separate pictures of the maker's mark - in different lights etc.

Hope you can come up with the answer!

Hello,
The script might read TW. Thomas Wallis II is a possibility. Jackson's 2002 Edition page 230 and Grimwade 2975.

The nearest mark I can think of is John James Whiting of London.... close but perhaps not close enough.... see what you think.
Best wishes, Mike.

The Lion Passant looks as if it could be provincial.
Silly bit of advise - if baffled I always turn makers marks the other way up - W then becomes M for instance. This one looks equally odd when inverted but ......
