sugar tongs - unknown maker

Hi,

Can anyone help me with identifying the maker of these sugar tongs. They appear perfectly genuine, cast in 3 parts, London made, c1775. The maker's mark is unusual in being apparently in an "upside down" shield.

Any help gratefully received.

In reply to my own question - John Jones & John Chadwick were registered as Buckle-makers with their mark registered on 30th May 1775. Grimwade also points out that their mark was in a rectangular punch "with curved top". In the biographies Grimwade also indicates about John Jones II "He is probably identifiable with the Jones Jones bucklemaker".

Yet another example of a buckle-maker making sugar tongs - it really does pay to look at that section of Grimwade!!

Glad you found the answer.

I did try working backwards, knowing that partnerships were often the outcome of Master and former apprentice relationships, to see if I could find an 'I C' who was apprenticed to an 'I I', with no luck, but it's a method worth trying.

Trev - I am very interested to hear you checking Master wtih their apprentices - do you have a data base of these or is there an online source of this information ?
If is it one you've compiled I have a list of silversmith wills I could swap it for !
